  1. The Hugenots were French Protestants. I think there were 50,000 of them. They were literally fleeing for their lives, and were glad to be given asylum in England. They did not receive money from the State, but were given a hand up entirely by voluntary donations, most of them, I think, quite small. The Hugenots did not take jobs from the native population, but provided jobs by bringing a textile industry with them.
