  1. What I can't understand about Carl is that I have heard him state plainly that he is an atheist, and yet he seems to be a dualist - when does the soul enter the foetus, Carl? I can't see these positions as being compatible. If some of the Lotuseaters don't know anything about the history of abortion because it has not concerned them personally, I would urge them to read the testimony of retired (or deceased) gynecologists relating their experiences before the 1967 Abortion Act in Britain. Anyone who uses abortion as a form of contraception is a fool - I am assuming contraception is available, which of course it may not be. The alternative to legal abortion is not no abortion, it is criminal abortion (again, please read memoirs of old gynecologists). I am sure that miscarriage is a terrible experience, but about 30 per cent of human conceptions end in this spontaneously. Nature often rubs out a mistake (I am not talking about a human mistake like forgetting to practise contraception). If you criminalise all abortion you are throwing the victims of rape, incest and some life-threatening conditions to the wolves. There are so many bad cases - perhaps find out about some of them.
