2,000-year history - and before - the Celtic tribes were pretty disunited, which is why the Romans occupied Britannia (roughly modern-day England) for 400 years. However, the Celts had a culture and traded with Gaul and further afield. They did not have underfloor heating or good roads but they were not totally uncultured. Tacitus wrote that the very expensive Hadrian's Wall was built 'to separate the Romans from the Barbarians', but the Caledonian tribes only kept up their constant guerrilla warfare because they regarded themselves as the Resistance against an invading army.

I said that, as a person of Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and Norse ancestry, who was born and brought up in Britain, I define myself as an indigenous British person. An American told me that this is not how the word 'indigenous' is used nowadays.
