On someone else's TV (I don't have one) I saw on one of Michael Palin's travel programmes an inspiring young man in Lagos, Nigeria who was teaching primary-school children in a slum area. He told Michael Palin that he was one of 17. His father's second wife had 16 children. I don't know what his father did for a living, but I am guessing he was a rich banker or something like that. I regard this level of reproduction - however rich one may be - as highly irresponsible. It is, of course, encouraged by polygamy.

I remember some years ago, at a Meeting about population in SOAS in London, I mentioned a small news report I had read in a newspaper that day. It said that Niger was now the poorest country per head of population, in the World. It also had the highest average fertility rate per woman - 7 children per woman. This got me branded as a Fascist and I was not allowed to utter another word for the rest of the meeting - 'No platform for Fascists'. There was a strong implication that it would be better for the general health of the building if I left. This I did not do.

Like the World as a whole, Britain has far too many people. For food security, we need 34 million people in Britain - not 75 million. Also, accommodation - building a million uninsurable homes in river flood-plains in a time of global warming is not a solution. But work? Before we mention AI, let me just mention my ex-colleague who re-trained, kitted herself out with printing, scanning and computer equipment, and did the work of what used to be done by a small firm of six people. This requires great versatility, ability to jump into vertical learning curves, and a great capacity for work, of course.
