Btw, it is now believed that older fathers - some of whom are very famous, and very proud of having become aged fathers - have an increased chance of begetting children who have schizophrenia or autism - not as immediately obvious as Down Syndrome, so not so publicly culpable at having been produced.

I'm very intrigued by some of The Lotus Eaters' unquestioned assumption that all women live in some kind of social, political, economic and psychological vacuum, in which there is but one factor deciding their fate: their will. No-one else (eg husbands or boyfriends) has free will, there are no political decisions causing housing shortages or unemployment, there are no spontaneous miscarriages, there is no infertility, there are no untimely deaths. What the women wish for and decide will happen will be what happens. What a nice thought!
