@LilySaintSin I think it was a party to get people through the darkest time of the year: have lots to eat and drink, invite people to big meals, catch up with people you haven't seen for a while, have lots of light and big fires, bring in evergreen leaves and branches into the house to remind you that the trees will come back into leaf again, give presents to people. Christians appropriated the winter Solstice celebration to graft on the celebratìon of the birth of Jesus (we do not know exactly when Jesus was born). Other religions have festivals of light to counter the darkness of winter (Hannukah, Divali). Pope Gregory said that pagan places of worship should not be demolished if they were in good repair, but should be converted into Christian places of worship, as 'people would know their location and would be used to coming to them'.
