  1. Pantomime is a mixture of the Commedia dell'arte and circus. The plot is traditionally a fairy tale like 'Cinderella', 'Puss in Boots' or from 'The thousand and one nights', like 'Aladdin' or 'Sindbad the Sailor'. The form has gained traditional conventions, such as 'drag' for both male and female actors, double-entendres and audience participation (a legacy of the old music-hall). There are often two versions - an adult version for evening performances and a version more orientated towards children for matinees. I remember the pantos I saw as a child in Glasgow having very high production values - eg four live white Shetland ponies pulling Cinderella's coach at the end. Panto is performed around Christmas.
