Remembering that the Established Church of Scotland is the moderate version - the church at Crathie is attended by the Royal Family when they are staying at Balmoral. The Free Church of Scotland is stricter than the established Church of Scotland, which Frees regarded as having become too tolerant and liberal. A faction broke from the Free Church, which they regarded as having become too tolerant and liberal. There were not very many of them, so they were called Wee Frees (by others). They called themselves 'The Free Church of Scotland'. To distinguish themselves from this faction, the original Free Church of Scotland called themselves 'The United Free Church'. The strictest Frees do not have music in services - a tuning fork starts the congregation on the correct note to sing the psalms (hymns being too modern). Within about two bars everyone is in a different key signature and time signature, as I remember from listening to them on the Scottish Home Service when I was a child. It sounded as if it was coming from somewhere east of Istanbul - quite an intriguing sound, actually. There are no statues, paintings or stained-glass windows in the places of worship. There are no vestments - every garment worn by the Minister is black.
