  2. Francis, there is a mental illness called 'Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy'. This refers to when a parent gets satisfaction from the attention they get from having their child get a lot of medical attention and treatment, and undergoing multiple surgeries, so having a 'trendy' 'Trans' child gives a lot of scope for this. The way she was dressed was how no African woman would ever dress. Lady Susan Hussey may have been sussing Marlene out to protect Camilla who was present. Lady Hussey had six decades of doing this - she may have sussed consciously or preconsciously that there was something inauthentic about the person she was talking to.

  13. I'm hesitant about taking statues down. I think it is a bad idea to cover up history. If the figure depicted in the statue is controversial, an accompanying plaque can be provided alongside it giving the FACTS about the person and the person's actions.

  16. Adding to what Francis said, there is an assumption on the part of men that women are automatically wholly responsible for contraception, and men don't need to take any responsibility. There is another assumption by some people that taking contraceptive precautions is easy for women. It is not. Contraceptive pills and intrauterine devices can cause severe side-effects. Diaphragms can be inconvenient and messy (btw they need easy access to copious amounts of clean water to use - not available in many countries). It seems to me that men - especially men who hate the idea of abortion - need to examine their own level of responsibility in this department, and to consider condoms and vasectomy more often than they do.

A schoolteacher visiting Stratford-on-Avon with her class of eight-year-olds took them to see a matinee performance of 'Romeo and Juliet', thinking that, because it was a matinee performance, it must be suitable for children. The play contains gang warfare, murder, suicide, vendetta politics. The children were totally distraught at the tragic ending. The teacher was outraged that a warning had not been given that it was not suitable for children.

It is very important for girls from the earliest age to regard physical activity (athletics and/or organised games) as normal and fun, even if - like me - they are totally mediocre in performance. It builds muscle and bone, increases coordination and confidence, and lays down muscle memory in the brain, so that, after perhaps 15 or 20 years of having little or no time to do much physical activity, a foundation will be there to enable a re-taking-up of physical activity to improve fitness, which will have deteriorated in the meantime. This will be much more difficult if childhood/adolescence has been spent being sedentary.

  47. Religions are not the answer. All religions are sexist - Christianity probably the least, Islam certainly the most. I am worried about the essentialism that Konstantin is displaying in labelling 'empathy', 'compassion', 'feminine'. Some of the least sympathetic and empathetic people I have met have been women. I have met extremely unempathetic men as well. The terms 'gender', 'feminine' and 'masculine' have no place outside a book of grammar. Biological organisms do not have a gender, they have a sex, female or male, which is determined at conception. We know all about abnormalities, and they prove nothing. Sex cannot be changed, but some people are straight and some people are gay or bisexual. Some men are ballet dancers (they may be straight or gay - so what?). Some women are scientists and enjoy mountaineering. This does not make them inferior women. In the 19th century, respectable people were saying that a girl who read 'difficult' books would render herself sterile! Surely we have moved beyond this?
