  18. The terms 'feminine', 'masculine' and 'gender' have no place outside a book of grammar. Biological entities do not have a gender. They have a sex - female or male. This is determined at fertilisation and cannot be changed. There are disorders of sexual development, sometimes causing inaccuracy or confusion of the diagnosis of sex at birth. This usually comes to light in subsequent years, and requires treatment. There are sex-chromosomal aberrations (X0, XXY). There abnormalities are very rare. A person with only one X chromosome is a woman of small stature, with heart abnormalities, cognitively impaired and sterile. A person with sex- chromosomal configuration XXY is a man, taller than average, muscularly weak and sterile. A person with Swyer's Syndrome has tissues throughout the body which are completely insensitive to androgens, including testosterone. No tissues in this person's body respond to testosterone. Therefore the person looks like a girl at birth and is usually only diagnosed when menstruation fails to occur at an expected age. They look and feel like girls, have always thought of themselves as female, and are shocked to discover that their chromosomal configuration is XY. They have undeveloped, undescended testes inside their abdomen which need to be removed or they will become cancerous. They do not have an internal female reproductive tract, as to have this requires the possession of two X chromosomes and a complete absence of Y chromosomes. All these disorders are extremely rare. Some well-educated Victorians were convinced that girls who read 'difficult' books would render themselves sterile - too much blood going to the brain, and not enough going to the ovaries, you see. Obvious, isn't it? Many people nowadays would regard the assumption that women have no courage, resilience, intellectual ability or creativity as essentialist and therefore sexist. Long hair and nail varnish do not a woman make.
