SARS-CoV-2 can have a natural origin (from a horseshoe bat from a cave in Yunnan) but still have been subjected to 'gain of function' procedures in the lab, making the virus transmissable between humans. Zoonotic viruses normally take years or decades to adapt to having human-to-human transmission. If there was less than perfect Safety/Security procedures in the lab, an infected scientist (asymptomatically infected) could carry it outside the lab.
