  2. Egyptian murals: from the ones I have seen, the men seem to be darker than the women. This could reflect the fact that women did not work outside or expose themselves to the sun to the same extent as men. However, I do admit I know next to nothing about this.

  15. 'Napoleon' by Abel Ganz (1926?). Black and white, silent, with subtitles and intertitles. It indicates where the subtitles are directly quoted from a character, eg Nelson. Writing, acting, directing: all five stars. Six and a half hours plus intermissions. Try to see it on a big screen.

I did notice as a student that one highly educated lecturer in particular would conflate fact and fiction, eg talking about the character Hedda Gabler as if she were a real woman, and extrapolating from that to real women - although some people think the character Hedda Gabler is really a self-portrait of Ibsen. He did the same with Racine's Phaedra, and 'Shakespeare's' (or the Earl of Oxford's, if you prefer) Lady Macbeth. You could possibly find sexism here.

  19. The English Heavy Horses (Shires) were bred to carry knights in armour. (The Scottish equivalent are the Clydesdale horses.) They were out-manoeuvred by the light, agile Arabian steeds, from which present-day racehorses are descended, which literally ran rings around them. (Compare a World Waar II bomber being attacked by Spitfires.)

  23. If alien pilots are biological organisms they will probably not be infallible. The only way to get round the Galaxy is to distort space-time. When you are coming out of this distortion, it may be risky and liable to go wrong. The witness of the UFO hovering above the British tritium-making facility at Chapelcross near the Solway Firth, south Scotland (1980, I think), said the object 'seemed to gradually materialise, rather than just arrive'. (The facility was out of commission for the next five days.) The Russians claim to have shot an alien craft down with an air-to-air missile, from which they managed to do some reverse engineering. I would be surprised if the Chinese had not done the same.

  26. I can't see anything wrong with 'Oriental'. I think it is paranoid to assume racism if it is used. It simply means 'of or from the East'. Is 'Occidental' racist? I understand that Cambridge University has re-named one of its magazines to 'Early Medieval Studies etc . . .' Instead of its former title, 'Anglo-Saxon Studies'. Some American or American-influenced person in the office seems to think that only 'right-wing extremists' or members of the Ku Klux Klan use the term 'Anglo-Saxon', and it is meant as a racist weapon. This is just mad.

  27. It's only the British who ever had an Empire, don't you know. This Empire was wholly evil and has been the source of all the troubles and problems in the whole world ever since its inception. These problems are still with everyone and cannot be apologised for or compensated for - ever, although it is the duty of every living British person to feel guilty about the unmitigated wickedness of their ancestors and to pay reparations for the exploitation they did, and to have the same exploitation and humiliation practised on them as their ancestors practised on all the people of the World. I think that's what 'Decolonisation' means.
