This is just so fantastically great! 'Comfortably numb' has always been my favourite Pink Floyd track - there is so much to listen to! And, Rick, you are right about David Gilmour's voice. I discovered you yesterday and already I am totally addicted. I am never going to get anything done at this rate - and it is your fault!

Rick, she needs you as her (H.E.R.) record producer.

It's totally insane. They should recognise you, Rick, for the genius you are and be grateful. It's a great deprivation for these young people never to have heard these songs. They almost always have never heard any so-called 'classical' music either. I feel so sorry for them.

No, he is discerning.
3
You're always going to be great, Rick.

It's just hideous. Why couldn't we just have stuck to ASI? Doing tedious things like counting the erythrocytes per cubic millilitre of blood, which it would do quickly and accurately? Let Robots be Robots. Let Humans be Humans.
2
Brilliant and fascinating, as always!
2
I think it's 'reign' meaning 'rule'.

Improvisation: Beethoven wrote 'Cadenza' sometimes above the stave, giving the signal to the soloist to have an improvised solo. The most amazing ones I have heard hsve been from Canadian violinist Gil Shahan when he was playing Beethoven's violin concerto.
2
Fascinating! Your totally elucidating questions as usual, Rick. I never would have thought that I would find a master-class in drumming so interesting!
2
A great man, great interview, great to see John Lennon again!

The oldies are the besties.😂

Tim Smith is a fab singer. And you, Rick, are a fab guitarist (and OK drummer).

Also, what happened to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics?

When I have heard a 'Can you tell the difference between the Vivaldi extract and the computer-written piece?' test, I have thought that the computerised piece was very Vivaldi-like for about a minute and then it veered off to sound obviously not-Vivaldi. It was a bit like two roads or paths running parallel for a short distance and then one of them suddenly veering off in a different direction.

Congrats on reaching 3 million! Here's to the next 3 million!
1
Disgraceful!
1
I know I'm an ancient crone, but they really don't make songs like that any more. I feel so sorry for the young people now.
1
Happy Midsummer's Day (maybe a day late) to Rick and everyone.
1
I'm really sorry you suffer from this, Rick. We hope medical science will make a breakthrough to mend it fot all you musicians - and everyone else - soon.
1
Rick, I'm so glad you had such an intelligent and perceptive Mum. You take after her.
1
Pity Ravel's not around - he could have written him a concerto for the right hand! (Keith Jarrett would be much too polite to return Britten's to him - with corrections - but he would be able to add his fabulous cadenzas).
1
It sounds likely to me. As a non-visually oriented person - I can't draw a straight line - I find visual images very distracting to music.
1
Great, as always. It's always great to be reminded of bands that we had (almost) forgotten. But - cavill - where, oh where is the lovely portrait of John Lennon that used to be in the background? I hope nothing bad has happened to it.
1
Yuji Wang's rendition of 'Flight of the bumblebee': C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la musique.
1
It was fun for us too, Rick. The Ramones were the last rock band I liked (apart from some things from Madonna and the KLF in the 80s). You sound pretty Ramoney!
1
Thank you, everyone, for saying 'alternative'. 'Alternate' is a different word with a different meaning. Bless you for saving me from some pain today.
1
Broccoli and Brussels sprouts: if you are a 'non-taster' like me, you like them because you only taste the sweet compounds in them. Everyone else (nearly) is a 'taster' to some extent - it is on a scale - and tastes the bitter compounds. Some people can't bear the taste at all. So, no analogy here, sorry.
1
Not a dry eye in the house! Rick, you should have been (could be?) a conductor. Btw, glad to see John Lennon has returned.
1
I suggest that Psychology as we know it was invented by David Hume who separated it out from Philosophy.
1
Pop/rock music left the control of amateur (ie lover of) lyricists/poets and musicians, some of whom worked to become professional in every sense, and was taken over by accountants.
1
I love it when Rick puts on his drummer's Badass face!
1
'She's living in LA with my best old ex-friend, Ray.' There's a whole short story in that line.
1
You are totally right, as always.
1
I can't find anything in these at all. They all sound as if they have been sung by robots. I really don't like repetitiveness in music (I don't mean repetition, which can be appropriate and effective).
1
Don't leave us, Rick! We need you!
1
It sounds very Bachian.
1
Your piece sounds mysterious, Rick.
1
Rick, you are so positive! Bless you and have a Happy Christmas and a great New Year!
1
I always thought many of Lennon's songs sounded like English folk songs, which do tend to be in a minor key.
1
I wish I could come and see you, but I live in London (UK). I love you, and there's nothing you can do about it!
1
Loved it!
1
Rick, your hair looks great. Stop fishing for compliments.
1
That song was pretty damn good. That Jessie has a great voice.
1
Great! I've just realised - it's unconventional time signatures that appeal to me, just as it is repetitiveness of phrasing or melody that I really find painful.
1
Brilliant, as always.
1
Rick, happy birthday when it happens. Have a great time!
1
Rick, you are fabulous.
1
Do you really need perfect pitch? So long as you have reasonable relative pitch, isn't that good enough - even for a musician?
1
Love Rick doing this on the piano - really interesting for me. Although I like his guitar analyses too (and air drums).
1
You are great!
1
I was always reminded of Morse code when I heard the repeated note in 'The Wichita Lineman', which I think is appropriate for the context.

Yuji Wang's rendition of 'Flight of the bumblebee': C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la musique.

Red phone boxes in London have been turned into blocks of flats costing a million pounds each.
