  1. I think there is a difference in that USA is not an official theocracy. In fact, its Constitution is officially secular, ie not atheist but separating Church and State.

Creationism: I think the first eleven verses of Genesis I (ie the very beginning of the Old Testament) could be interpreted as a highly condensed version of the scientific explanation of Earth and living organisms - except that animals are described as appearing before plants, whereas it should be the other way round. 'And there was light' could be interpreted as referring to the Big Bang. 'A day' would be lasting hundreds of millions of years. This is saying that the Old Testament needs to be read not always literally.

  3. As a hard agnostic, I don't like to hear The Bible being dismissed as 'imaginary stories'. It is very interesting but the Old Testament, in particular, cannot always be taken literally - although there is a lot of history contained in it.
