I get annoyed by the BBC's euphemism of 'Bonfire Night' instead of Guy Fawkes Day. Presumably this is to try not to offend Catholics. In Scotland, Halloween was a fun children's festival. The begging of children was quite mild, without threats, but with disguising, guisers going round the town, knocking on the doors of complete strangers and doing a 'turn' for a small reward of money, nuts, fruit or sweets. Householders were prepared for this and found it amusing. At Halloween parties there were turnip lanterns, ducking for apples, and fun with treacle scones on strings.
