I think these students should be told that R L Stevenson's 'Kidnapped' is based on a true story which was even worse than the one that RLS gave us, as - SPOILER ALERT - he gave the protagonist eventual justice and a happy ending. This did not happen in the real-life story. The same applies to Anne Bronte's 'The tennant of Wildfell Hall' - (a) based on a true story, (b) SPOILER ALERT - AB eventually gives us a happy ending. This did not occur in real life. I think AB's best-known book - she did write others - is very important politically and should be taught in secondary schools alongside 'Jayne Eyre', 'Villette', 'Wuthering Heights', and the Jane Austen oeuvre. Anne Bronte should have gone on the banknote instead of Jane Austen - she does not need any more publicity.
