  1. Galileo was punished because of his devotion to science. Anthropogenic global warming deniers and 'antivaxxers' (I wonder if they have ever been vaccinated against smallpox, measles or yellow fever?) are in the position of the Roman Catholic Establishment which persecuted Galileo and Giordano Bruno. They fear science and want it suppressed, and scientists to be discredited and silenced. To ridicule former scientific theories which have now been shown to be wrong is to display a complete lack of comprehension of the scientific process. So long as disproven theories are regarded as having been disproven, they present no threat to the pursuit of knowledge. However, if they continue to have a zombie existence - 'the Earth is flat', 'vaccination is dangerous', 'there is no such thing as anthropogenic global warming' - they can cause great harm.
