Because girls on average develop slightly earlier than boys, they tended, on average, to achieve higher scores in the 11 plus IQ tests, meaning that a greater number of girls had 'passed' than boys in the same cohort. This happened repeatedly. What also happened repeatedly was the 'excess' girls were simply defined as having 'failed' in order to make the numbers of boys and girls who had 'passed' approximately equal each year. This would not have mattered if the 11 plus exam had not determined at age 11 the course of the rest of the person's life.
