  1. Re nuclear power: you haven't mentioned the nuclear waste unavoidably produced by the controlled nuclear fission of uranium atoms which is the source of nuclear power. The low-level nuclear waste becomes safe after about 450 years. The high-level nuclear waste becomes safe after 150,000 years. This is plutonium (which has a half-life of 24,000 years), a trans-uranium element which exists in nature in the merest traces in one of the isotopes of uranium (10 to the power of minus 18 g per gram of U). It is extremely toxic and radioactive. Britain produces 2 to 4 tonnes of it per annum. How do we keep it safe from criminals and terrorists who would love to get their hands on it? That costs us millions of pounds per annum. Also, there is the limited life of a nuclear power station. It will have to be decommissioned after 25 or 30 years, enclosed in a 'sargophacus' of tens of thousands of tonnes of concrete to seal it off. I have not mentioned Windscale, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl or Fukushima . . .
