Offensive views: perhaps the Earth revolves round the Sun; perhaps twinkling stars are actually suns with their own planets revolving round them - this was so offensive that it got Giordano Bruno's tongue torn out before he was burned alive; women should have the vote - just over 100 years ago women were tortured in British prisons (hunger strikes, read about them) for advocating this; perhaps women should receive higher education - very offensive to Victorians who believed that reading 'difficult' books would make a girl sterile; perhaps women in labour should be offered an analgesic - the whole medical Establishment (whatdyaknow, male) were against it until Queen Victoria - who was pregnant again - said that she was going to have it.
