  7. Menstruation should not be disabling. It is just something that happens 12-13 times per year for about 40 years (except during pregnancy). Sanitary protection - very available and CHEAP in Britain - means that there is no 'flooding'. Analgesics and a hot-water bottle - but also regular exercise to tone muscles inside and outside, and good diet - can deal with congestion which may occur on the first day (in my experience, on the first two days the flow is fast, on the second two days it slows down). If there is untreatable crippling cramp then a small operation to dilate the neck of the uterus may be called for. What can be harder to deal with is the catastrophic hormonal fluctuation that must occur for a part of the body to detach itself from the main part of the body. The lining of the uterus is detaching and dropping out via gravity. The arteries in the uterus are thus exposed, bleed and take about four days to heal over. This has to happen if the egg, expelled from the ovary two weeks previously, is not fertilised, otherwise the lining of the uterus will become cancerous. To detach, the lining of the uterus requires the level of oestrogen in the bloodstream to be low (this has reduced gradually over the previous fortnight), and a catastrophic drop in progesterone level. This occurs immediately before menstruation. This is what makes one physically and psychologically weaker than normal at that time. I call it 'the progesterone plunge' - like falling down a mineshaft. It is as well to be aware of it as a phenomenon, to know that it will be temporary, and to stay away from the office bully at that time. (Of course, real life sometimes demands exams, driving tests, interviews, etc, at exactly that time - bad luck.) It should last for half a day, or maximum one day. It can be combatted with chocolate. As soon as menstruation starts, hormones levels start to increase, and it is like a black cloud gradually lifting from one's feet to one's head, until one is finally clear of it. The bleeding is no big deal if one is well fed.
