  47. Charing Cross Hospital in London's Accident & Emergency Department failed to diagnose my broken arm - I had tripped and fallen on the pavement. Apparently, they could not read X-rays. I thought it felt broken, but having been told adamantly that it was not, I inflicted further damage on it. It was finally correctly diagnosed by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon six months later. I have had 18 months of pain and inconvenience.

He was busy campaigning in some overseas countries to get them to abolish the death penalty, which they had democratically decided they wanted for their worst criminals. Meanwhile, the British taxpayer was paying him to scrutinise proposed private prosecutions and *throw out those which had no merit*.

  104. As a Scottish Unionist, I don't support any of the candidates or the SNP, but Mahyar I don't think you know the significance of the 'Free Church of Scotland'. It sounds authentic that this is the nearest church to Mrs Forbes, if she lives in Dingwall which is in the north of Scotland. The Free Church of Scotland is more or less based in the Highlands and Islands. However, it is distinct from the established Church of Scotland - eg Crathie Church which the Royal Family would attend when they were staying at Balmoral. The Free Church of Scotland broke away from the Church of Scotland because the latter was becoming too liberal and tolerant (although still Calvinist, and therefore adhering to the pernicious doctrine of predestination). There was another schism from the Free Church by a faction which deemed it to be becoming too liberal and tolerant. They were not very many so, although they called themselves 'the Free Church' everybody else called them 'the Wee Frees'. The larger faction called themselves 'the United Free Church'. I think they may have reunited since. The adherents of the Free Church did (still do?) not approve of statues, paintings, stained glass or instrumental music in church. They had (have?) a tuning fork to start the congregation on the correct note to sing psalms - hymns too modern. I used to hear these sung occasionally on radio as a child on the Scottish Home Service on a Sunday. By the second bar, everyone would be in a different time signature and key signature. It would sound like singing from east of Istanbul - very intriguing. But perhaps the Free Church of Scotland is different from those days. Perhaps the Church of Scotland has given up believing in predestination. Perhaps Scotland will become independent.
