  1. First-past-the-post as a voting system works if there are only two parties (or maximim three). Where you have 12 candidates, you are almost bound to have many more people voting against the winning candidate than voted for them. This happened with the election of the London mayor. It also helps if a candidate has a guaranteed voting base who will vote for him come what may - perhaps because their spiritual advisor tells them to. It is also an unlimited term of office - Sadiq Khan managed to get two-term limitation abolished. So, please don't blame Londoners!
