  1. You don't have to watch TV. Then you don't have to buy a licence. BBC Radio sometimes does excellent dramatisations of classic novels by, for example, Dickens or Toltstoy (you don't need guys in wet shirts climbing out of lakes), and more modern authors like Nicholas Montserrat (they did an excellent two-part dramatisation of his 'The Cruel Sea'). Radio 4 also sometimes does good features - I'm thinking of their comprehensive relation of the Post Office Scandal). Also, Radio 4 Extra has great old comedy shows like 'The Navy Lark', 'Take it from Here', 'The Goon Show'. But I never listen to News or opinion - so biased!
