Diane Abbot - who I think ought to have retired some years ago - got into Cambridge University at a time when there were no concessions or reach-out programmes for pupils at non-fee-paying schools, who had had no special advantages. Diane Abbot was not only black, she was also a girl - believe me, in those days, sexism was still BIG. She attended a Comprehensive school, and got into Cambridge under her own steam. Some years ago I sometimes heard her on a Radio 4 programme called 'In Committee' which recorded Parliamentary Committees that had taken place that week. She was an exemplary Chairperson on these Committees. Credit where credit is due.
