  1. DSM (the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of mental 'disorders') - it never refers to 'disease' or 'illness' - is only used in the USA. Most other countries use the International Classification of Disease (ICD) from the WHO. One of the major criticisms of the DSM is that, in trying to define what is a 'disorder', the Committees of psychiatrists try to be consensual and atheoretical at the same time. This encourages proliferation of 'Categories' and diagnostic drift. There are other major objections to the DSM, but it always seems to be held up as an - if not the - go-to authority on psychiatric diagnosis by media people in all English-speaking countries.
