A Pedant writes: Galileo was not actually tortured by the Church. He was ordered not to lecture or publish, was shown the instruments of torture which would be used if he did not comply, and was held under house arrest for the rest of his life. He complied, being in his seventies and in failing health. However, Giordano Bruno was terribly tortured and burnt at the stake. But he was going further than just confirming Copernicus's theory of a heliocentric Universe. He was speculating that the points of light that we call stars could possibly be Suns, some even with planets revolving round them! Well, this was too much for the Church, and he was put to death. The Catholic Church formally apologised for its treatment of Galileo late in the twentieth century (I can't remember the exact date). I don't think they have ever apologised for their treatment of Giordano Bruno, although the number of 'exoplanets' found in other solar systems is now more than four thousand, and counting.
