We could not have pursued the Falklands Conflict without the Americans lending us the use of their Marisat satellite serving the Southern Hemisphere (we do not have a satellite in the Southern Hemisphere). It was also helpful to have bought from them Sidewinder missiles, and to have the Chileans tying up Argentina's most highly trained troops in the Andes. None of this detracts one iota from the professionalism and endurance displayed by the British troops in recapturing the islands. However, I wonder if we would get the same cooperation now - also, remembering our depleted armed forces.
