@FlanPoirot Yeah it doesn't make it ok but knowing that history helps foster compassion, I think. Much like the European empires, I was a bully as a child, just on a much smaller scale. I'd pick on others because my dad would abuse me at home. My own aggression was fueled by a fragile, undernourished ego. If I had the same power and wealth as someone like King Leopold, I would've likely been just as destructive and imperialistic as he was.
But yeah, I do agree there is a hypocrisy about the whole immigration thing. Even now, European corporations extract coltan, cocoa, gold, uranium, lithium, copper, oil, and other raw materials from Africa. It's only expected that those raw materials will have human resources tagging along as well. And France still controls the monetary policy of its West African subjects and has overseas territories so the empires never really ended. But that's ok though, people willl continue to speak against immigration and life will still go on.

user-nw8zm2wu6o By what metric? Singapore has a higher pre capita GDP, higher HDI, higher PPP, less pollution (especially considering they're still trying to clean up Fukushima Daichi), higher birth rate, greater ethnic diversity, greater global competitiveness, more tech startups, and greater percentage of the military-age male population in the armed forces. Even Singapore's life expectancy is nearly the same as Japan. By this rate, China and Russia will inevitably do to Japan what Japan did to them. If things don't change, Japan will be the future Tibet or Ukraine. China and Russia will not stop after they take the Kurils and the Senkaku Islands.
