Tokyo is such a depressing place I imagine...

@ketsukusa I said Tokyo, not all of Japan. All my Japanese friends here in the States/Canada don't have very high opinions of Tokyo. A great many of my European American upper classmates in my Japanese class didn't like Tokyo either. I'm studying in Kyoto next year but I hope to God I never have to go to Tokyo.

@Србомбоница86 yeah but not every capital has brothels on nearly every street corner or a culture that has normalized sexual depravity (fueled by economic instability). Tokyo is a special kind of f***ed up it seems. So many men and women go into prostitution due to poverty. The same happens in LA of course but it doesn't seem to permeate the culture. I've never been to Tokyo but based on what I've seen, I'd be very hesitant about going. If my work or studies somehow force me there, I'd be very concerned upon first arriving, even if I end up liking it. Mind you, this is coming from an African American man who was born in one of the poorest, most violent neighborhoods in the country.

@selestiiaa you're completely right. I agree. That's why I said "I imagine". One's imagination doesn't always reflect reality. Tokyo might actually be a nice place and all the graduate Japanese students in my university, multiple news sources, and first hand accounts from Tokyo residents in my class might be wrong. .

@clesonpoison-d2y I didn't say that at all. Read my post again.

@eiko7749 I'm just a bit concerned. Being a bit concerned isn't a big deal at all. I must disagree with the idea that all cities are the same, though. What my Japanese classmates, Japanese teacher, and upper classmates who studied abroad say about Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto is the opposite of what they say about Tokyo. What I read in the news (NHK, TV Asahi, etc) about the Kansai region is the opposite of what I read about Tokyo. But like I said, my concerns might be negativity bias.

@KOTheWorld I suspect that there might be more English speakers in Tokyo than anywhere else in Japan (besides that base in Okinawa but that's technically US soil). Either way, I'm studying Japanese right now from native speakers at my university so it should be fine.
