  2.  Jebus Bhrist  I'm an American too and though I agree that piracy is just an excuse and that there's never a good reason to pirate, steal, kill, or kidnap (assuming that VICE is reporting honestly), we need to admit that slavery played and huge role in our economic expansion and still does to this day. The 13th Amendment was never repealed and millions of Americans are still legally enslaved. Not to mention the fact that the US is the global hub for human trafficking, along with the UK, Saudi Arabia, China, and Japan. We can still love our American culture and our freedoms without being historically dishonest.
