In both the Dhammaccakkapavatana and the Sutta Nipata, Buddha spoke against the entire idea that anyone can be born into any caste, whether Shudra or Brahmin: Not by birth does one become a Brahmin, nor by birth does one become a non-brahmin. By work one becomes a Brahmin and by work one becomes a non-brahmin. By work one becomes a peasant and by work one becomes an artisan. By work one becomes a merchant and by work one becomes a servant. (Sutta Nipata 650-651, p. 120) The British Raj and all the edits they made to the Vedas is irrelevant since criticism of the Hindu caste system predates both the British Empire and the Christian religion.
