They don't protect their other cultures though. They wiped out the Ainu and they're trying to do the same to the Ryukyu. I don't like Biden at all but he's right. It's all about the Yamato; no concern for Ainu, Ryukyu, Kakyou, or Zainichi in Japan.

Even young Japanese professionals are leaving Japan for the West. They get paid more picking blueberries in Australia than they do with their Master's degrees in Japan.

@eribus8057 Singapore has more immigration but is cleaner and richer per capita than Japan. Singapore is what Japan could be. Stricter civil laws make immigration work.

@3ndeavor Slavery also wipes out natives and relocates them. The Hyksos did exactly that to the Hebrews shortly after taking over Egypt. Japan also did that to Koreans and Chinese following their invasion of the East Asian mainland. A lot of comfort women and Unit 731 test subjects were wiped out completely.

@suericgp Japan needs to overcome its xenophobia if it wants to keep its culture. If its economy and military decline further, China will do to Japan what it did to Tibet, East Turkestan, and Hong Kong. Neither Japan nor Taiwan can solely rely on the US for its security needs.

@3ndeavor Japan does need to take this criticism if it wants to survive. China and Russia both want Japan for themselves. The Senkaku Islands are just the beginning.

@eribus8057 There are no perfect solutions; only tradeoffs. Japan can either tighten its laws toward authoritarianism to facilitate immigration or it can remain lax and go extinct. Going the Singapore route is a major blow to democracy and liberty but it's the only way to keep an overdeveloped society safe, clean, and growing. A sacrifice will need to be made either way.

@thisguy3500 America is the most qualified to speak on xenophobia actually. It's one of only three nations in history who fought a war to end slavery, the other two being Israel (New Kingdom Egypt) and Achaemenid (Persia). America also ended the Japanese Empire. "Invasion" is a pretty hyperbolic term. Though I don't like mass immigration, I do think it's ok to make more legal avenues which expedite the process. That's what Singapore did and they're cleaner, safer, wealthier, and more diverse than Japan.

@eribus8057 Japan doesn't have a headache though, it's aging near the end of its life. It needs to bring in nurses from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand to take care of it. But Canada, Australia, and Singapore have more relaxed immigration laws and better pay so the nurses are going there instead. Your analogy is a misdiagnosis.

@thisguy3500 "Draconian" is pretty hyperbolic too. Authoritarianism is the sacrifice that overdeveloped East Asian nations must make if they wish to have a global competitive edge. Singaporeans actually pick up their trash because if they don't, they'll get whipped with bamboo. Japanese just hide their trash by the train tracks. They do the same with their violence, exporting it to SE Asia in the form of Yakuza trafficking networks. I love Japan and loved living there but I'm very critical of their hypocrisy. @Agtsmirnoff Germany, a European country, actually beat Japan to become the third largest economy in the world. Singapore is also wealthier, cleaner, and more diverse than Japan. Japan needs to follow in their footsteps if it wants to be powerful enough to protect the Kuril and Senkaku Islands from Russia and China. The more land Japan gives up, the more land their Pacific adversaries will take.

@suericgp Japan is actually declining on all metrics including national GDP, per capita GPD, population growth, currency valuation, HDI, and PPP. It's best you ask questions rather than make assumptions.

@eribus8057 Before 1965, there was a huge problem with the various European mafias in the US, especially the Italians and Irish. Singapore was able to take in many immigrants without having much crime because of their strict laws. Singapore is cleaner, safer, and more diverse than Japan.

@eribus8057 Overdeveloped nations don't have a choice. They can either tighten their laws or let developing nations take their spot. It's a huge risk but it's going to be a huge risk either way. A nation can either give up some of its ethnic identity in order to be a global superpower or remain isolated and go extinct. Japan could also just accept that they're loosing their global competitiveness and becoming a middle income nation. But that would be a huge blow to their national pride. They would rather go extinct than face such dishonor. The European population in the US did do well under European immigration but that came with many challenges too, including the mafia and an increase in hate crimes towards black Americans. The mafia and the Klan were comparable to today's drug cartels. There were also laws against Asians, like the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Internment of Japanese Americans. Civil Rights didn't even exist until black Americans started protesting in the 1960s. Native Americans didn't benefit from any of this and are just now coming back to their native lands after the Trail of Tears pushed them into Latin America.

@GeeMannn Japan's xenophobia is bad because it hurts the Japanese economy and gives China a competitive edge. If Japan doesn't tighten it's civil laws and open up to more immigrants like Singapore did, it loses its status as the dominant economic/military power in the Pacific. China will gladly fill whatever power vacuum Japan leaves behind. China will do to Japan what it did to Tibet and East Turkestan. It can't rely on the US to protect it, Afghanistan and Vietnam made that mistake already. Japan's peace, prosperity, and stability rests on Japan's ability to globalize.

@eribus8057 Singapore mostly takes Asian immigrants from India, China, Indonesia, Malayasia, etc. It's close to open immigration but they do screen for criminal backgrounds. Muslims often get a bad rep but Muslims in Singapore do fairly well under the strict laws. Christians do fairly well there too, though Singapore is mostly Buddhist. Its laws are largely based on Christian laws left behind by the British Empire. That gives them an edge in dealing with Western markets. Their trilingual use of Hindi, Mandarin and English also gives them an advantage over Japan. Refugees from Hong Kong have been flooding into Singapore following the CCP takeover. Japan can learn a lot from them.

@eribus8057 No, I talk to my middle-aged Japanese host mom. Even when I was living in Japan while going to Nanzan University a few years ago, she couldn't find nurses to take care of her aging parents. She had to move them into an understaffed nursing home in Nagoya. They had a big, nice house near a beautiful bamboo forest and could've easily hired help but they had to sell it because there were no nurses. All the nurses went to the UK for better pay and permanent resident status. I talk to the middle-aged strawberry farmer who owns several hundred acres of land but he can't make enough money because the government won't allow foreign workers to come and work full time. I talk to the middle-aged restauranteur in Kyoto who would love to accept more patrons and maybe even take a break, but she can't because there's no one to bus the dishes or take orders. I talk to the Park Ranger in Nara who would love to have help feeding the dear and managing their population but can't because there are no young applicants willing to come and do that work. Lastly, I talk to the tween boy who loves his school and loves all his school friends but can't go there anymore because the government cut their funding since there aren't enough students. That's who I talk to. That's what I've seen with my own two eyes.

@suericgp Germany has higher national GDP, higher per capita GDP, stronger currency (Euro), higher PPP, higher HDI, lower self-deletion rate, better work-life balance, and more social mobility than Japan. Germany is doing better than Japan on every metric, not just GDP. China actually holds more US debt than Japan.
