The Russians, a people who have never known democracy and free speech have taken "between the lines" communication to a high level, I remember one man on 1420 dismissing the effects of sanctions, "everything is normal.....the same as usual.....the sun still shines....etc" then right at the end he asks for some money as he says he hasn't eaten today.

  13.  @Owlr4ider  I disagree, most people (myself included) were indeed fooled by Russia into thinking they were a formidable power, this I believe was coloured greatly by the USSR's victory in WW2, but the Red Army was almost 40% Ukranian and other non Russians made up sizable contingent too, Russia is NOT the USSR and has dined out for free for too long on it's legacy. Nuclear weapons are a red herring, they are a strategic weapon, they can only be used as a psychological tool against nations that do not possess them but they cannot be used to bully powers that do and they cannot be used to project your tactical power, it's like you having insurance for your house/car, great but not much help if you can't afford to buy your lunch. Your other point about NATO militaries is another red herring, they were developed and shaped to suit an holistic Western defensive doctrine over a longer time, and of course British and French units would fight with the same desperation if they were defending their own countries this goes without saying and tells us nothing, impressive as Ukraine's military performance has been with a motley mixture of ex-soviet and Western equipment (nothing is a better teacher than experience as the Red Army also found out 1941/2 they were a different beast by 1943) they'd be much more impressive if they'd had Western training and doctrine since 1990. Your final line is telling, Russia has had it's pants pulled well and truly down and the whole world can see how big they really are.

I especially liked the rebuke handed to pseudo-intellectual "Realists" as if their selective lessons gleaned from the past is relevant to the future. An excellent clear and concise summation of the threat that will persist as long as this pestilence called Russia does. This is indeed an existential war for both sides, therefore it will not end in negotiation but the total defeat of one side like in WW2.

War has a brutalising effect on people and the nature of warfare changed with revolutionary France, now not just armies fought but whole societies which supported them were also targeted, when the 20th century began with the Boer war 95% of casualties were still military and 5% civilian, by the end of that century the mechanised lawnmower of death was in full flow and by Gulf war 1 those statistics were neatly reversed, that's a lot of brutalised people. I agree that in essence there was little difference morally between Auschwitz and Hiroshima but y'know Vae Victis.

I was shocked when I read it, but WW2 opened the floodgates for the massacre of civilians and then Vietnam Yugoslavia Rwanda and now Gaza, it goes on and on.
