Of course the Europe project was from the start one of integration of the economies to stop another terrible war and its worked, trade was just the carrot to show people how advantageous and powerful it can be. European countries need to be able to stand up to the USA and China as a bloc, Britain still has an overinflated sense of their importance in the world and they have to be taught a lesson that you either pay your club fees or you pay for casual membership like Norway and Switzerland but pay you will- There simply is no other alternative for a country in the middle of Europe.

@lesigh1749 Political and economic union was in the treaty of Rome right from the start and Britain wanted to join because it was so economically advantageous and they played a crucial role shaping EEC policy. The EU wants to retain the UK as a member because it will make the bloc much stronger but at the end of the day it will survive without them whereas the UK cannot survive as a political and economic entity with little or no trade links to the EU. I'll ignore the last bit as it is just childish keyboard warrior fantasy- Do you think its 1889? 😂 without trade links to the EU Britain will be too concerned trying to feed itself within a few months.
