Russia always was and always will be a brutal oppressive autocracy, it's people are too cowed and too primitive for democeacy. The sooner it falls apart again the better it may be for some of them.

  19. ​ @Hazzelnot94  Indeed, I believe the reason for this is end of empire, Germany Japan and Italy suffered sudden catastrophic defeats that left their exceptionalism in tatters and forced them to pursue peaceful paths (Japan for cultural reasons surrounding shame found this harder), even France suffered defeat and humiliation but not as complete. The USA still maintains supremacy but the cracks are beginning to appear, UK and Russia were never militarily crushed, things just got crappier and so they still maintain the delusion of greatness but the economic carnage caused by brexit could be just the wake up call for them, soon it will break up with Scottish independence and Irish reunification. Russia likewise may fragment after defeat in Ukraine just as the USSR did after defeat in Afghanistan but as I say their future is less optimistic.

Inability of expression makes violent uprising the only outlet.

  27. Russia has always had autocratic kleptocrats from the Tsars to the Bolsheviks to the modern day Putin gangsters, its people have never been educated enough to understand democracy. This is what would happen to humans if they were marooned on an inhospitable alien planet where merely staying alive against an inhospitable and savage climate was a triumph in itself, but it is no alien planet, it's a place so close to the most advanced countries in the world, so there is no natural reason for this misery.

  31.  @vedser  Yes because Western armies are composed of highly trained technical specialists, the days of massed ranks of conscripts who are just cannon fodder and are a danger to themselves the professional service people and expensive complicated equipment are long gone, only primitive armies like Russia who have no sophisticated technology rely on people whose only skill is being able to stop a bullet, it is wasteful and pointless and we moved on from it years ago.
