The Black man saying "the flag is just a piece of cloth, that's all it is." Then why hang it, fly it, wear or sport it?
A flag is a type of symbol and symbols are powerful representations of something (an ideology, philosophy, creed, nation, unit, people, organization, religion, institution, team, group, etc.).
This is just my opinion and not a formal definition, but I believe gers across easily.
The flag they use, although is a piece of cloth, it does mean something and if the Black man or any member doesn't have a firm sound meaning, respect and honor for the emblem, flag, symbol then he shouldn't be a member. If I wee a member I wouldn't trust or put my trust or consider that person loyal or a comrade.
I have no military or law enforcement training experience.
Just a lady looking on the outside in.
