I agree, but things were handled very differently in those days, not just by royals. Times have changed however, but this problem was very much a product of the ear in which it happened and societal attitudes to such problems. It's not an excuse I know, but I could not see it happening today. My grandmother kept family screts from me until I was over 18, and that was only her mother marrying her husband's elder brother, so my father never knew whether he was to treat him as an uncle or a grandfather. There are many skeletons in older family closets.

@marie landry what does it mean to be "very British"? I think you will find such neglectful human traits in many nations of the world. If they had no money people would not care so much.

You can show interest or support without obsession, which is a more rare thing. If there is any "obsession" it is usually with gossippy or slanderous scandals rather than obsessing over the family in general in a positive light in regard to their royalty. Therefore a lot of the "obsession" is often from critics and negative onlookers regarding the family and not in an affirmative sense. Most moderate people are not obsessive or strongly opinionated about them. If they didn't appear rich their critics would not "obsess" at all, so it is not the uniqueness or character of the family that causes obessesion, but rather the jealous resentment against them. History shows many monarchs in societies without "obession," but often there would be respect. Therefore this "obsession" is a more modern phenomenon. 🙃

@moni4peace I agree, we all feel for them. Hopefully those days are gone with the likes of William saying he would accept a child of his being gay. The family seem to be moving on.
