Can a goldfish drown? Why can't fish drown? With humans, when water gets in our lungs we can’t get oxygen from it, so we can’t breathe, and therefore, we die. Fish are physically incapable of drowning because they have gills, not lungs. They can die if there’s not enough dissolved oxygen in the water which would make them suffocate, technically.
