Not only that, the INNengine design has been around since 1970's (possibly even earlier?) I forget original manufacturer but they couldn't get necessary funding to develop it Opposed piston two strokes were around in 1930's, probably most infamous was the Junkers in Stuka

@turbot_ Personally, I think the military pilots were 'showing off' to 'scare' a newbie? It happens in all walks of life. He was probably just trying to see how close he could get to give plane passengers a thrill but miscalculated, it's something experts do but usually they don't involve other people, 'calculated risk'

About 3 years ago Elon Musk bought super-capacitor manufacturer. At the time I thought it was to put a few super-caps in Tesla's for the reasons you mentioned. Today, it's looking more like he really just wanted super-caps to go away so his battery plant wouldn't be affected? One thing you didn't seem to mention is the fact super-capacitors are much much lighter than any batteries they replace (ignoring energy density as a lighter battery pack will improve things in other area's) Parts of Europe also use buses with battery/super-cap's, as you mentioned they can charge almost instantaneously reducing maintenance on braking systems plus use the super-caps to slowly discharge into the batteries increasing range or give an extra amp boost when pulling away from stationary

I'm not sure why some of the designs should have issues as marine power has been around for at least 150 year's with steam so salt water effects are pretty well known. I guess it's the very common problem of designers and engineers wanting ti do things 'their way' and not even look at proven technology. As a service mechanic I have seen some absolutely horrible designs that probably looked good on paper and do the job but are terrible from a maintenance standpoint. (it's very common for maintenance techs to say the designers should be forced to work on things they design, after a few years when things are siezed up and covered in 's***' Materials and lubricants have had steady improvements over the years so it shouldn't be a problem, after all, none of the underwater turbines is expected to cope with several thousand horsepower and 200,000+ tons of ship and cargo. Seals and pressures won't be extreme at 'normal' depths where these things operate.

Whatever happened to thorium reactors? They were 'all over' You Tube a few years ago. 'We' were led to believe they are far safer than fast breeder reactors and also capable of 'burning' nuclear waste

Tunnel is a good idea, particularly since tunnel boring machines are now well understood and longer tunnels have been completed. I know nothing about the geology around DC but it would probably be a lot easier than building the 'Channel Tunnel' between Britain and France, that was completed in 1994. The positioning and construction would be a lot simpler today even if the machinery has barely changed
