  1. About 3 years ago Elon Musk bought super-capacitor manufacturer. At the time I thought it was to put a few super-caps in Tesla's for the reasons you mentioned. Today, it's looking more like he really just wanted super-caps to go away so his battery plant wouldn't be affected? One thing you didn't seem to mention is the fact super-capacitors are much much lighter than any batteries they replace (ignoring energy density as a lighter battery pack will improve things in other area's) Parts of Europe also use buses with battery/super-cap's, as you mentioned they can charge almost instantaneously reducing maintenance on braking systems plus use the super-caps to slowly discharge into the batteries increasing range or give an extra amp boost when pulling away from stationary
