  1.  @turbot_  Personally, I think the military pilots were 'showing off' to 'scare' a newbie? It happens in all walks of life. He was probably just trying to see how close he could get to give plane passengers a thrill but miscalculated, it's something experts do but usually they don't involve other people, 'calculated risk'

  2. Tunnel is a good idea, particularly since tunnel boring machines are now well understood and longer tunnels have been completed. I know nothing about the geology around DC but it would probably be a lot easier than building the 'Channel Tunnel' between Britain and France, that was completed in 1994. The positioning and construction would be a lot simpler today even if the machinery has barely changed
