I'm not sure why some of the designs should have issues as marine power has been around for at least 150 year's with steam so salt water effects are pretty well known. I guess it's the very common problem of designers and engineers wanting ti do things 'their way' and not even look at proven technology. As a service mechanic I have seen some absolutely horrible designs that probably looked good on paper and do the job but are terrible from a maintenance standpoint. (it's very common for maintenance techs to say the designers should be forced to work on things they design, after a few years when things are siezed up and covered in 's***' Materials and lubricants have had steady improvements over the years so it shouldn't be a problem, after all, none of the underwater turbines is expected to cope with several thousand horsepower and 200,000+ tons of ship and cargo. Seals and pressures won't be extreme at 'normal' depths where these things operate.
