@MikkoRantalainen That's BS. Straight cut spur gears are the cheapest to make and it's possible to make very accurate gears in a home workshop with some relatively simple tooling (no need for £100,000 CNC) They are not even all that difficult to heat treat when the tooth shape is so robust. They are hugely expensive to BUY because the people making them abandoned their original market when they found out how much WRC were willing to pay and in F! profits were even greater. (eg, Quaife used to make motorcycle 'race' transmissions, less than £750 complete, around 1980, you can figure out 30 years inflation what that's worth today) You probably never heard the story about (I think Frank Williams?) wanted better radiators that curved around wheel and was told it wasn't possible even though they had already been made for motorcycles several YEARS earlier. I believe the Japanese company making them was contacted and he had the first high pressure non leaking radiators in F1 about a year before anyone else

Apart from the size differences, it's pretty much the same as most motorcycle transmissions since late 1950's except a bit 'cruder' with separate dog clutches although they do make life a lot easier when changing pairs of gears.
