That was f**** great. At last someone explaining what and why offset cylinders work. Your animations make things much easier to understand, wish they had been available 20 years ago when I was trying to explain things to a bunch of people online. I don't know if you studied aircraft radial engines but things like the Wright Cyclone (R1820) had a fascinating development with a 'floating' counterweight. There is a lot of information on piston aircraft engines so a lot of the developments we see today are not really new but being transferred from 1930 developments. The material science has improved dramatically and so has the rpm range but basically, there isn't much really new stuff

After watching this again, I suddenly realised why the valve timing is different between intake and exhaust. I've been looking at cam timing for 1960's American V-8 engines and was puzzled why the exhaust was 10~20 degrees longer than intake, knowing that cylinder filling is most difficult part if not using forced induction. Offset cylinders! Now it makes perfect sense.
