  1. I'm British and always wondered about the US plugs and sockets. They look and feel cheap and nasty, glad you at least mentioned they are relatively unsafe. I guess it's a holdover from 1900's? British plugs and sockets are a traditional foot hazard as originally houses were retro wired hiding wiring behind skirting boards (baseboards) It's traditional but dumb, unnecessary and usually inconvenient. Ring main uses way less material and supposedly can supply higher amperage than spur mains? (I'm not an electrician but fixing motorcycles with 6v to 45,000v circuits teaches you a bit about electrickery)
