I think putting a label on it is largely pointless. You need to be able to think about the problem and design a good solution, and you need to be able to get that solution from your head into code. The important part is focusing on the things that make software better e.g. loose coupling, easy to change etc. Call me a "software person" for all I care. If I had to pick one, engineering covers more of what we need to be able to do in order to write good software.
