@HashirVani : Allowing any parallel legal system to exist, especially one that has laws extending to non-Muslims, is problematic. Freedom of speech is a also big issue.

@HashirVani : A Sharia Court sets a precedent for a parallel legal system, and it can violate human rights, especially if it discriminates on the basis of gender. You say "it's her choice" but choice is not always a simple matter for a female in a Muslim society. She may have limited access to institutions outside of her family, and intimidation by the family group is a very real thing in a culture which sees females as being under the guardianship of her father, husband, or some other male. Some areas of UK vs Sharia law that concern me: What about domestic violence? Hitting your wife is permitted in Islam. What about a man who wants more than one wife? Polygamy is permitted in Islam. What about marrying a child bride? Marrying a young girl is permitted in Islam. What about a woman who wants a divorce? Will she be guaranteed equality of divorce with the man? Is there a chance she might lose rights to her children if she remarries? What about a girl who chooses to leave Islam? Apostasy is strongly discouraged in Islam, whereas the UK honours freedom of conscience, freedom of religion. I hope I've explained some of the problems that I see why a parallel legal system is damaging to the cohesion of a country.

@HashirVani : My comment was about how Sharia Courts in the UK violate the human rights that are practised there. If you and 1.9 billion other adherents to Islam want to follow Sharia, that's totally fine by me!!! There are a many countries where you can live which are governed by some level of Sharia. I strongly object to the setting up of a parallel legal system WITHIN a culture which upholds very different human rights values. Sharia councils are contributors to social #ghettoisation.

@HashirVani : Sharia Courts in the UK are potentially violating the law of the land. Plus they encourage social ghettoisation. You can't have it both ways. Enjoy the benefits of living in the UK but not follow their laws. As for non-Muslims not needing to follow sharia, what happens when cartoons of Muhammed are used for a school lesson on free speech? Are you going to jump up and down and call for UK citizens to follow your Islamic blasphemy laws? Or are you happy to allow #FreedomOfSpeech?
