Why not offer temporary residence permits (like Australia does) until things become safe for them to be repatriated to Afghanistan? Money would be better spent on resettling them in a country that shares their own 'cultural values'.

DNS : On a case-by-case basis that does happen, but the overall stance regarding those on 'temporary visas' is to encourage them to return to their country when it is safe, with financial assistance for repatriation. I worked with Afghan refugees from the last Taliban period of rule. Most of those Afghanis preferred to return to be with their families and to help rebuild their country. For that I applaud them wholeheartedly. In the case of one young Hazara teenager, his whole family and tribe had been massacred by the Taliban. So he preferred not to return to Afghanistan but to study in the medical profession and reconsider his options later. And he was granted that choice.
