I would argue that the facts and our prior scientific experiences throughout history suggest aliens probably exist: the fact is we know that life can exist in the universe (else we would not be here debating it.) I think it is safe to assume that we are not special, given that EVERY TIME we have thought we were special in the cosmic scale, we have been wrong: we aren't the center of the solar system, the galaxy, the universe (any more-so than any other point is the center of the universe... an infinite space has no center); why should earth be the only place in the universe to have life? To think such would be to make the same mistake as all those other times we thought earth was special. (To be fair: earth is special in one way, which is that it is the place we call home)

I would argue that if we want to engage in the elipsoid approach, we should set a good example for our potential alien bretheren, and broadcast a signal into the void any time we observe a supernova. Perhaps when betelgeus eventually gives up the ghost?
